I really like this. I'm glad I came across this article and decided to read it on a day where I'm extra busy trying to fit class, writing, med school apps, keeping sane, and many other things into my schedule. I just started writing on Substack, but I can see myself writing about a lot of the same things you do. Let's me know I'm not crazy and that there's a community out there that shares similar ideals as me!
'i love Most people associate sustainability with oat milk and organic cotton, but it’s ultimately about questioning how the world works, and how it could be better.' - it's this, so much of what's hurting us is interconnected; true sustainability will require us to hold a mirror up to ourselves as consumers and truly reflect on our true role in contributing to a fashion industry that is wrought with problems.
It's nice to get your point of view on writing as a job that pays a bill and not just a passion. I really appreciated the story you wrote about self-publishing your book. In brief, I enjoy reading those stories in which you talk about your journey as a writer as I don't think we read a lot about them. You're one of the rare writers whose journey is relatable. I know you have years of work behind you, and that working at Highsnobiety probably gave you visibility, but I also believe that I relate to your experience because you're giving us facts rather than just telling to pour our heart in writing. In brief, I enjoy reading about harsh and stark reality backed up by your view and data.
Thank you for being here! I hope one day I can also make a living from writing my own pieces. Writing in Dutch narrows downs the audience but let’s start there and then conquer the world 🙃
Sadly making a living from writing is incredibly & demoralisingly hard Alec. I have been writing about beauty for almost two decades and it doesn't pay to have a point of view and have honest opinions about products, brands and industry. Glossy magazines have always been a closed circuit for select few and many digital publications are sadly the same. Everyone wants to make a living from their talents but few prepared to pay others to write. A complicated subject but glad we are all on Substack exploring and building communities
